Re: lower ratings ... I do not know what the problems were, but ... Sean Webb Here's the scoop: I'm more interested to read the wide range of ratings on this camera, seeing that he had some opinions to get a star, so I was totally ready to return to this puppy, if not lived up to my very high standards.
That said, here is my experience:
I have a Linksys Wireless N dual band router running on a single level ranch about 50 meters from some high voltage lines very seriously. The network is a Power Mac connected via Ethernet cable, and 3 laptops (one PC, an old Macbook and Macbook Pro new) via wireless. Off topic, I'm not impressed with the range on the Linksys router, but it offers some of bandwidth very fast in the home with two networks to connect to, so live with it.
I unpacked the WVC80N, which came with an ethernet cable, CD, and some instructions / manual. I followed the instructions to the letter, which instructed me to put the CD into a computer. I put on the Power Mac The CD works well and opened a configuration guide. The installation guide told me what to do ... was found that the wireless devices on the network, then told me to connect the Ethernet cable into the camera ... I clicked 'next', then the router ... 'Next', then connect power to the camera ... 'Next', and make ... 'Next' ... it detected the camera via ethernet cable, no problems, and continued to take me through the start-up ... I had to create a user name and password for the camera, etc, something amazing happened. I used to be very technical, but I do not like to mess with having to find a way to make something work ... I like to work. So to my surprise, when I clicked "next" on this occasion, all the advanced settings that allow the camera to be viewed through Internet (through secure and password) is done automatically for me while I looked. No port mapping. No set-up WPA. No problem! Awesome!
Then I took the TZO set-up (free for 90 days) for the service to be able to look at the camera from anywhere on the Internet at any time. To explain the technical aspect of this technology to people who do not: If you have a normal service cable or DSL Internet, you get what is called a "dynamic IP address" assigned to you from your cable company. This IP address is a number that allows other computers to be able to find your computer when you ask to see something (like pulling down video of [...] or to obtain search results from Google - it is a " send the video to this address "type of thing). My experience with the response of the network at home with the camera: I've seen complaints about the camera interferes with the performance of other computers in the house, bogging down the network, so I tested this camera in two ways: 1) I put everything on one side of the dual-band router (simulation than it would be like a normal wireless router), then 2) put the camera on one side of the router, and everything else on the other. Image Quality: It is not HD, but it's not bad. Digital artifacts do not exist in adequate lighting, and if the light is nonexistent in the room at all (a night light), the low light level operation is outstanding. The camera will turn off if there is no light present. It is an infrared camera has no infrared light, and not take anything when I noticed some infrared lights in the room. If you want to be able to check in cats during the day, or see the grandparents while feed / change / play with the baby, this is a great camera for that. The color is good. The clarity is good. I can even watch it on my iPhone. Have to see what the rest of the market has to offer, and how high or low, as Linksys has become today, I have to give this camera 4.5 stars.
